Superhuman acquires YC-backed notetaker Fathom as productivity platforms push into agentic work
Superhuman is acquiring Fathom, a Y Combinator-backed meeting notetaker with more than 400,000 monthly active users, to fold meeting context into its AI productivity suite instead of building the tool itself.
Fathom was founded in 2020 and has raised more than $30 million, according to PitchBook data, which put its valuation at $94 million in 2024. Its investors include Zoom Apps Fund, Telescope Partners, BoxOne Ventures and Maven Ventures, along with individuals such as Reddit chief executive Steve Huffman, former Twitch chief executive Emmett Shear and Cruise co-founder Kyle Vogt.
The notetaker's free plan has drawn more than 400,000 monthly active users, and the company says more than 1 million people have recorded meetings on it to date.
TechCrunch reported that Superhuman tested an internal notetaker with a limited set of users earlier this year before deciding to buy an existing product to integrate with its productivity suite, with AI at the center of that plan.
Shishir Mehrotra, Superhuman's chief executive, confirmed the internal effort and said it strengthened the company's conviction about demand. "It also becomes very clear how deep the products in this category are and how much you need to build," he told TechCrunch. "A lot of these products make the job feel really easy, but it's actually quite tricky to do a great job in all parts [of meeting recording]."
Mehrotra said he was impressed by technical work done by the Fathom team but did not specify which elements. He said that with a notetaker in place, Superhuman can work on surfacing meeting context in real time.
Competition among meeting notetakers is intense, with startups including Granola, Read AI and newer entrant Wispr raising millions of dollars to fund growth. Venture-backed notetakers are under pressure to do more than record and summarize meetings, even when they have a healthy customer base or revenue run rate. Fathom chief executive Richard White pointed to Superhuman's 40 million users as the main attraction. "The reach of Superhuman is massive," he said, adding that if Fathom had stayed independent it would have had to build many things that already exist on the Superhuman platform.
Superhuman already offers an email client, a docs app, a calendar and a database product, and recently launched an AI agent builder. With a notetaker in the middle, the company says it can draft emails, update data entries, schedule follow-up meetings and have AI agents begin work and pull insights from meeting data.
