Switch 2 Apparently Jailbroken With SmileBASIC 4 and OpenAI Codex

A modder used SmileBASIC 4 and OpenAI Codex to apparently jailbreak the Switch 2 and run a custom Mario Kart World.

The demonstration showed new playable characters in the racing game, including Cinnamoroll, the red Angry Bird, Peter Griffin and Steve from Minecraft, according to The Verge. The modder, Sammy Hajhamid, who uses the name 'pepsipu,' said OpenAI's Codex helped create the jailbreak, which is called 'ns2jb.'

The jailbreak is software-only and tethered. In this case, that means the user must run it from a game every time the console is turned on for it to work. The exploit requires SmileBASIC 4, a title that lets users program and play games, The Verge reported. Another modder claimed that SmileBASIC 4 is 'not strictly needed,' the report said.

The jailbreak still appears extremely complex for most people, and its full impact is not yet clear. Users on the Switch 2 hacks subreddit are debating how significant the exploit is, according to The Verge.

The report said the release could mark the beginning of a string of exploits for the Switch 2, especially if modders use AI to help.
