Taiwan's Taiex Hits Record Intraday High as Tech Stocks Rally

Taiwan's Taiex hit a record intraday high of 48,601.53, led by tech gains after an AI-driven Wall Street rally.

TSMC shares rose 0.40%. MediaTek gained 7.88%, and Delta Electronics advanced 2.67%. The three semiconductor-industry companies are the largest on the Taiex by market capitalization, according to the report.

The intraday record came about three months after the index hit a record high in June. Investors have seen overall strong growth in Taiwanese stocks this year, helped by the AI boom and Taiwan's role as one of the world's most critical semiconductor and hardware supply chains, CNBC reported.

Standard Chartered said in a July note that Taiwan's equity market is dominated by the technology sector, which represents about 88% of the benchmark market index, with most of that in semiconductors. The bank added that Taiwan produces more than 90% of the world's most advanced semiconductor chips, specifically those measuring 7 nanometres and smaller.

HSBC data tracking global equity-market capitalization rankings in May showed Taiwan had overtaken Canada to become the world's sixth-largest stock market, according to the report.

Traders were also watching developments related to Taiwan's August export orders, due later on Tuesday. UOB said in a Sept. 22 note that markets expect the print to remain resilient at 63.0% year on year, compared with 61.9% in July, underscoring sustained AI-related demand.

Editor's Summary Taiwan's benchmark Taiex reached a record intraday high of 48,601.53, led by TSMC, MediaTek and Delta Electronics. The gain followed an AI-driven rally on Wall Street and comes as Taiwan remains central to global semiconductor supply chains. Investors are awaiting August export orders data for further signals on AI-related demand.
