Teardown Finds Googlebooks May Add App Restore on Reboot
Android Authority found a planned Googlebooks “App restore on reboot” option in an Android 17 QPR3 beta teardown.
The strings found in the beta include “App restore on reboot” along with three choices: “Always restore apps,” “Ask every time” and “Never restore apps.” According to Android Authority, this suggests users would be able to set a permanent preference or be prompted at each reboot.
The option would resemble a feature previously available on Chromebooks called Welcome Recap. Android Authority said Welcome Recap offers the same three restoration options and also displays weather updates and upcoming meetings, allowing users to quickly resume work, study or use of favorite apps.
Android Authority said the restoration setting would join a Phone Unlock feature it recently discovered. The report said Googlebooks were intended to combine Android and Chrome OS in one platform, but the platform fell short in several ways at launch.
Those launch issues included unreliable device pairing, Chrome’s inability to support multiple profiles, and poor Linux support compared with Chrome OS, according to Android Authority. The report said Google is bringing fixes and improvements to the platform and that it hopes more fixes and additions arrive before the end of the year.
