TechRadar guide: ZDFneo is free in Germany, VPN needed abroad

TechRadar published a guide on Oct. 16, 2026, explaining that ZDFneo can be streamed free in Germany without registration but is blocked abroad. It recommends NordVPN and lists supported devices, shows and live sports.

ZDFneo is part of the ZDF family, which also includes ZDF, ZDF Info for documentaries, 3Sat for general entertainment, Phoenix for documentaries and current affairs, Arte for culture, and KiKA for children's programming, according to the guide. All of those channels are available to live stream through the ZDF platform. TechRadar says users do not need an account to watch ZDFneo online. Creating a ZDF account adds the ability to download shows, move between devices without interruption, and receive recommendations based on viewing history; it requires a username, password and email address.

The guide states that ZDFneo operates only in Germany. When a viewer tries to tune in from outside the country, access is cut off. TechRadar recommends a VPN as a way to connect to a German server and use the service as if the viewer were at home. It names NordVPN as its top pick and cites a promotion offering up to 75% off, plus three extra months free. The guide describes NordVPN as capable of unlocking ZDFneo and as TechRadar's number one VPN choice.

According to TechRadar, NordVPN and ZDFneo can be used on Amazon Fire Stick, Android 7.1 and later, Android TV 5.0 and later, Apple TV tvOS 13.4 and later, Chromecast, iOS 13.3 and later, iPadOS, and web browsers including Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. The guide notes that NordVPN cannot run directly on some other devices, such as PlayStation and Xbox consoles, televisions running Apple TV and various smart TV systems, and VR headsets. It suggests running NordVPN on a smartphone or computer and setting up a hotspot as a workaround.

ZDFneo carries original and imported programming. At the time of publication, TechRadar listed popular titles including Under Salt Marsh, Juliet, Infiniti, Twisted Metal, The Assassin, Hacks, Gnomes and The Rookie. Its rotating film library included Good Bye, Lenin!, LA Confidential and Kneecap. The guide also says ZDF airs live football regularly, including Nations League, World Cup and European Championship matches, qualifiers, international friendlies and the Champions League final. It shows major multi-sport events such as the Olympics and Winter Olympics, along with UCI cycling events including the Track, Road and Mountain Bike World Championships.

TechRadar includes a disclaimer saying it tests and reviews VPN services for legal recreational uses, such as accessing a service from another country subject to that service's terms and conditions, and for protecting online security and privacy while abroad. It says it does not support or condone illegal or malicious use of VPN services, and that consuming pirated paid content is not endorsed or approved by Future Publishing.
