TechRadar: Modern endpoints and managed VPS can hide ongoing maintenance work

Two TechRadar articles argue that modern endpoint deployments and managed VPS plans may conceal legacy application and server management burdens.

In the first piece, the CEO of application management firm appCURE writes that many endpoint projects appear ready once devices are enrolled, policies are in place and virtual desktops can be provisioned. The infrastructure work may look complete, but applications often tell a different story.

According to the article, moving an older application to a new platform does not alter its underlying behavior. An application may still rely on ageing components, expect administrator access to write files and registry entries, and have a largely manual or poorly documented update process. A well-managed endpoint cannot make a difficult application easier to maintain simply by hosting it.

The piece argues that modern management platforms have made deployment quicker, but this creates a false sense of completion. Problems tend to emerge later: an update may require repackaging, an operating system change may expose an unrecorded dependency, or a certificate may expire. Deployment gets software to users; modernization determines whether IT can manage it after the project team moves on.

Legacy applications often carry old assumptions into new environments, the analysis continues. Enterprise application estates grow over years under different teams and Windows versions, with incomplete documentation and missing installers. Some applications expect access to folders or registry locations that would not be considered appropriate today. Modern environments like Intune or Cloud PCs can expose these issues because they place tighter limits on what software can change.

IT needs to know how an application installs, what it depends on, which system parts it accesses and how it is updated and removed. Age alone is not a reason to replace software, but supportability should be tested. Rewriting every legacy application is impractical; MSIX packaging can provide a clearer identity and cleaner updates, though legacy middleware or undocumented dependencies may still need extra work. Testing must reflect real use, because opening the main window does not show whether employees can complete key tasks.

The second article examines managed VPS hosting. It notes that shared hosting often hits resource limits with complex web apps and AI workflows, leaving users to choose between managed and unmanaged VPS. The trade-off is more than price: managed plans promise technical support and maintenance, but providers define 'managed' differently. Some will configure applications, while others simply offer more support channels at certain hours.

Reported benefits of managed VPS include dedicated CPU, RAM and storage, 24/7 support, faster incident response, outsourced system administration and easier compliance with regulations such as GDPR or HIPAA. Drawbacks include higher monthly cost, less granular control, potential vendor lock-in, slower custom changes and the fact that some providers withhold root access. The article adds that there is no industry-standard criterion for what a managed service must include, so the fine print matters.
