TechRadar Names Top 4K Blu-ray Discs for TV Color Reproduction
According to TechRadar's Blu-ray Bounty review, Speed Racer, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Wicked are among the top 4K Blu-ray discs for showcasing TV color.
The reviewer, who began testing 4K Blu-ray discs for TechRadar in November 2024, said the format offers unmatched picture quality and uncompressed audio that allow high-end televisions and sound systems to perform at their best. '4K Blu-ray is easily the best way to view a movie at home,' they wrote. The recent list was prompted by discs that stood out for color during the Blu-ray Bounty tests.
Speed Racer, the 2008 Warner Bros. film based on the 1960s anime, stars Emile Hirsch as a racecar driver who becomes a target after refusing to join a rival team. The reviewer said the disc's colors 'practically explode on screen,' with bold, vibrant tones in home interiors, clothing, and racetrack advertisements. The disc supports Dolby Vision and was described as 'a reference quality disc.'
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Universal Pictures' sequel to the 2023 animated hit, features the voices of Chris Pratt, Anya-Taylor Joy, Charlie Day, and Jack Black. The reviewer noted that animated movies often have striking colors, but this disc stood out for its vivid Lumas characters, natural-looking overalls for Mario and Luigi, and richly saturated space scenes with pink, purple, and blue hues.
Wicked, also from Universal, is an adaptation of the Broadway musical reimagining The Wizard of Oz. The reviewer praised the disc for balancing vivid and true-to-life colors, particularly in Cynthia Erivo's portrayal of Elphaba, whose green skin appears believable, and Ariana Grande's Glinda, whose bright pink outfits pop without seeming unnatural. A scene of Elphaba under a pink-flower tree is often used by the reviewer in TV testing.
The list also includes The Sound of Music, distributed by Disney. TechRadar's article is based on the reviewer's continuing experience with 4K Blu-ray, which they have become a collector of since starting the Blu-ray Bounty project.
