TechRadar Review Praises HP Color LaserJet Enterprise 4701 Speed and Security, Faults Interface and Toner Costs
TechRadar calls HP Color LaserJet Enterprise 4701 fast and secure, but faults its non-touch UI and color toner cost.
According to TechRadar, the Enterprise 4701 has a faster dual-core 1.4GHz processor and 2GB memory, four times the RAM of the HP Color LaserJet Pro 4201, with both printers reaching 35ppm. The extra specification supports a recommended duty cycle of up to 4,200 pages per month, the review said. It has a maximum paper size of Letter/A4, print quality of 600x600dpi and enhanced 1200x1200dpi, and connectivity through USB, Wi-Fi and Ethernet, plus a USB Host port. Apple AirPrint is supported. The dw version tested includes auto-duplex and built-in Wi-Fi, although other variants are otherwise the same, according to the review.
The review said HP's Enterprise line brings stronger Wolf Pro Enterprise security, including new post-quantum cryptography protection intended to shield the printer from attacks by quantum computers. The printer ships with four cartridges rated for 2,300 black pages or 2,000 color pages. The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise 4000/X400 Series replaces the outgoing 400 Series, with blue livery and a crisper design that TechRadar called an aesthetic improvement. The main paper drawer holds 250 sheets, and users can add up to two 550-sheet high-capacity cassettes costing around US$370 each, plus a 50-sheet front-loading multi-media tray for envelopes or specialist paper. TechRadar said this upgradability is not available on cheaper alternatives such as the Brother HL-L3230CDW.
The review also noted drawbacks. The Enterprise 4701 has no touchscreen, and TechRadar found the control panel and user interface frustrating. The review said the Enterprise model replaces the Pro's rotary dial with a normal push-button keypad, but it still would not call either interface user-friendly. Unlike many HP printers, it lacks Bluetooth, so setup took longer and required following on-printer prompts with a fiddly control panel. Because of added security, there is no default administrator password printed on the printer; during setup users can create an admin password meeting HP's requirements of at least eight characters including uppercase, lowercase, a number and a special character, or configure it later through the printer's Embedded Web Server. TechRadar said this extra work is typical of an enterprise printer rather than a simpler home-office model. The review also called the device expensive and the color toner costly.
TechRadar's verdict was that the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise 4701 is a strong choice for an expanding business because of its robust security and upgrade options, despite the non-touch display, unfriendly interface, lack of Bluetooth and high price. The review measured the printer at 421 x 427 x 297 mm and 36lb (16.3kg), small enough to share a home-office desk without crowding it. It described the machine as reassuringly heavy and compact, and said its print quality was comparable to the cheaper HP Color LaserJet Pro 4201.
