TechRadar Review: Scuf Valor Wired Comes Close to Top Xbox Controllers

A TechRadar review says the Scuf Valor Wired is a value-packed wired PC and Xbox controller that gets close to top Xbox pads but doesn't fully match them, with TMR sticks and dual-mode triggers.

The review notes that the controller launched March 31 and is available for $89.99 / £69.99 / AU$179.99. Its list price is given as $99.99 / £94.99 / AU$179.99, with discounts already appearing in some markets. The pad uses TMR thumbsticks, a type usually reserved for higher-end controllers, and is said to be drift-resistant and more sensitive than Hall-effect sticks. Dual-mode shoulder triggers let players switch between full analog travel and clicky micro-switches, while two remappable back buttons provide extra in-game shortcuts. The face buttons, however, are described as spongier than the micro-switch buttons found on faster pads.

TechRadar praised the controller's build quality, handling and appearance. Its lightly textured grips and thumbsticks helped provide a secure hold even during intense FPS sessions, and the translucent gray body of the Smoke colorway was called gorgeous. The companion app for Windows and Xbox lets players adjust response curves, set dead zones and remap buttons, then store up to three profiles on the controller and switch between them in-game with a single button press.

Reviewing performance, the site's reviewer said the TMR thumbsticks felt sensitive and responsive, delivering excellent steering control in Forza Horizon 6. The dual-mode triggers worked well for actions such as parrying in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, although they were not quite as snappy as those on the more premium Asus ROG Raikiri II. The custom profiles also had a real impact, helping the reviewer rise from seventh to first in a racing event and land quicker headshots in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, especially when the triggers were in micro-switch mode.

The review listed the main drawbacks as the lack of wireless connectivity, triggers that are less sensitive than TMR triggers found on top-tier pads, and discrete trigger vibrations that are an interesting extra but not a game-changer. TechRadar nonetheless concluded that the Scuf Valor Wired is an appealing package, and that at its price point users are getting a great deal of controller for not much cash, even if it is not as good as the best wireless alternatives.
