In a Sept. 2 analysis, TechRadar argues that perimeter-only security is inadequate for cloud-first, hybrid enterprises, and that network-embedded zero trust offers practical risk reduction.

According to the analysis, traditional perimeter-first security worked when users, workloads, and trusted networks were co-located, comparing the old model to single-player games. Today's enterprise resembles a multiplayer online game, where users connect from anywhere and applications, data, and assets span clouds, edge locations, branches, partner environments, and mobile workforces, so trust can no longer be assumed solely by network location.

The report notes that legacy VPN-led and perimeter-only architectures struggle with cloud-native applications, hybrid work, and API-driven ecosystems. VPN access creates blind spots in visibility, leads to inconsistent policy enforcement, and offers weak session-level control. As enterprises scale across branches, clouds, partners, and remote users, they need continuous verification, consistent policy, and real-time monitoring.

Zero Trust, in practical terms, means verifying each user, machine, and application regardless of location, applying least privilege so users access only what is needed and only as long as required, enforcing consistent policy across devices and clouds, and continuously monitoring sessions and telemetry. This approach lowers mean time to detection, narrows blast radius, unifies policy control, and simplifies compliance.

The article emphasizes embedding Zero Trust into the network layer itself rather than assembling point solutions. The network layer offers a whole-view of traffic, telemetry, and connections, enabling integrated SD-WAN, secure internet links, private connectivity, and managed security services. This reduces dependence on fragile add-ons and provides stable controls across branches, clouds, and partner links.

Real-world examples cited include manufacturing sites isolating operational technology traffic from enterprise IT to prevent production impacts, logistics firms using device-bound certificates on private wireless to stop unauthorized access to tracking systems, mining and remote operations relying on segmented private networks for safety, and financial services enforcing consistent policy across clouds and branches to reduce fraud surface and speed response.

The core outcome of Zero Trust, the analysis states, is risk reduction by minimizing unnecessary access and privileges, constraining lateral movement through segmentation, and accelerating detection so that threats are contained before major damage occurs.
