Tesla in Full Self-Driving mode fatally strikes man crossing I-80 in Vallejo

A Tesla in Full Self-Driving mode struck and killed a 71-year-old man crossing I-80 in Vallejo, California, early Thursday.

The California Highway Patrol said in a statement to media outlets that it reviewed dashcam video from the Tesla. The video “showed the Tesla’s brakes being applied as the vehicle steered to the left in an effort to avoid the pedestrian,” the statement said, according to the report. “Despite these evasive actions, the right front portion of the Tesla struck the individual.”

The Tesla driver stopped and remained at the scene, the report said. According to the Chronicle, authorities believe at least one other vehicle struck the pedestrian after the Tesla, but no other drivers stopped. The CHP’s Solano Area office asked anyone who witnessed the accident or has information to contact authorities.

Last week, in a separate incident on I-80, a driver said he was asleep and using FSD when his Tesla plowed into a police car that was stopped at the scene of an accident. After that incident, the CHP warned drivers that “Despite its name, full self-driving is not fully autonomous. Technology does not relieve drivers of their responsibility to safely operate their vehicles.”

The Vallejo case adds to scrutiny of how Tesla’s FSD system performs and how drivers use it. The CHP’s statement in the earlier I-80 crash focused on driver responsibility, saying the technology does not remove the obligation to operate a vehicle safely.
