Tesla sets October 10 debut for long-delayed second-generation Roadster

Tesla has scheduled an October 10 debut for its second-generation Roadster, first shown as a prototype in 2017. The car has been repeatedly delayed, and some early reservation holders have canceled.

The announcement did not say where the event will take place or provide further technical details. Engadget reported that Tesla's previous promises for launch dates have often slipped, though the October 10 plan may be more likely to stick. In August, The Information reported that Tesla would launch the Roadster soon, with a particular focus on a flying capability, according to Engadget.

Tesla's website features a countdown to the Roadster reveal, Engadget reported, and the countdown is teased by an image that may hint at cold-gas thrusters intended for a SpaceX model that flies. Engadget said it was not clear how Tesla would deliver the flying capability, and compared the potential feature with the Cybertruck's Wade Mode.

The second-generation Roadster has been largely absent from public view since its 2017 prototype reveal. At that time, Tesla said the updated electric sports car would accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds, reach a top speed above 250 mph and offer more than 600 miles of range. The base model was listed at $200,000, while a Founder's Edition variant was priced at $250,000.

Reservation holders have waited years for the car. Engadget reported that some customers who placed $50,000 reservations have already canceled them, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and technology YouTuber Marques Brownlee. Tesla has not said whether the specifications or prices announced in 2017 will carry over to the production version.

The October 10 target follows multiple delays since the prototype's debut. Tesla's official X post gave the date without explaining the cause of the long gap between the prototype and the planned reveal. Engadget noted that the reveal is scheduled for October 10 so long as it is not delayed again.
