Texas school district approves $11.19M Apple lease, replacing Chromebooks with iPads and MacBook Neo

The Beaumont Independent School District in Texas has approved an $11.19 million four-year lease to replace its Chromebooks with iPads and MacBook Neo devices for teachers and students. The district cited reliability, cost, and performance.

Under the plan, the district will distribute more than 4,000 iPads to students in pre-K through second grade, 9,500 MacBook Neo units to students in third through 12th grade, and 1,000 MacBook Neo devices to teachers. The district said the change was driven by better reliability, lower costs, and stronger performance. It had been spending nearly half a million dollars on repairs and support for its Chromebook fleet.

The district compared the MacBook Neo with products from Lenovo and Asus and concluded that the Apple device had the strongest performance and reliability among the devices evaluated. Apple’s financing terms were also more favorable, and access to AppleCare influenced the decision, according to the report.

The Beaumont Enterprise report said the Lenovo model had a minimum financing rate of 4 percent, a higher four-year cost, and a guaranteed buyback value of $10 per device. The Asus model had competitive upfront pricing and met instructional needs, but also cost more over four years. The district said the Asus model’s plastic parts would require more repairs.

The lease replaces the district’s installed base of Chromebooks, which had become costly to maintain, with Apple devices intended to serve students from early childhood through high school, along with their teachers. The full report is available on the Beaumont Enterprise website.
