Lucasfilm will release the original 1977 Star Wars and the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter on IMAX 70mm in 2027.

The 50th-anniversary screening of A New Hope is set for February 19, 2027, according to Lucasfilm. Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled to debut on May 28, 2027, exactly 50 years after the opening weekend of the original film.

Engadget reports that the IMAX 70mm prints will be struck from a newly restored version of the original movie, not the digitally remastered version that has added scenes and altered effects. Lucasfilm has not explained how the restoration was done. For many fans, seeing the original film without those additions may be a major attraction. The original version has only been shown twice officially since 1997, both times at a UK film festival last year.

As for Star Wars: Starfighter, it was reportedly shot digitally on Sony's IMAX-certified CineAlta Venice 2 cameras, with Tom Cruise said to have operated one during production. The film was made in an 8.6K source and 4K master format, meaning it will need to be upscaled and digitally converted for IMAX 70mm, a format that can exceed 14K resolution. Engadget noted that IMAX 70mm will likely be the best way to see the film.
