Thermal Master DV2 Review: Impressive Thermal Monocular Marred by Poor Software, TechRadar Says

TechRadar finds the Thermal Master DV2 impressive for nature observation but let down by unfinished software.

The review praised the DV2's hardware, which centers on a 256 x 192 sensor with a 12-micron pixel pitch. Thermal Master's RazorX engine, combining an FPGA, an ASIC, and an AI upscaling block, produces a 512 x 384 output image through interpolation. Detection range is rated up to 1,000 meters for a human-sized target, with shorter distances for smaller subjects. The camera has a 10mm f/0.8 manual focus lens, a 5-inch rotating and folding touchscreen, and a 50Hz refresh rate. It can be used standalone, and offers Wi-Fi streaming with RTSP support.

Among the positives, the review listed long-range detection, high thermal sensitivity of 20 mK NETD, Wi-Fi streaming, battery-powered operation independent of a phone or computer, and an 8x digital zoom. The negatives include a single included battery, unrealistic one-pixel detection claims, unfinished software, and illogical menu structures. These issues led the reviewer to assign a value score of 3.5 out of 5.

According to the review, the DV2 has few obvious retail competitors because professional birdwatching is not seen by most companies as a new market. For broader use, it cited the Axion Compact Thermal Monocular at $1,449.97, and the TOPDON TS004 and TS004 Pro, which are hunting-oriented. The TS004 has the same 256 x 192 resolution and costs slightly more than $400, while the TS004 Pro costs $759.95 and bumps resolution to 384 x 288, but its detection range of 650 yards is less than the DV2's.

The review concluded that the DV2's value depends entirely on the use case. It could be invaluable for identifying animals or people at range, but it is not suitable for every job. The most significant flaw, the reviewer said, is the software.
