TIOBE October 2026: R Passes SQL, Julia Rejoins Top 20, Go Falls to No. 11

TIOBE's October 2026 index shows R passing SQL and Julia returning to the top 20 for the first time in three years, while Go slips to No. 11 and Delphi/Object Pascal drops nine places.

The upper part of the index was largely unchanged. Python remained No. 1, followed by C, C++, Java, C# and JavaScript, and Rust held the No. 10 position after ranking No. 16 a year earlier. SQL climbed to No. 9 from No. 10 in October 2025, a month in which R stood at only No. 13.

Julia rose to No. 18 from No. 21. TIOBE CEO Paul Jansen said the language's growing popularity is largely driven by demand for modern programming languages that combine high performance with ease of learning, particularly for numerical computing. Python offers an accessible, high-level approach to numerical work, but performance can become a bottleneck, while C++ delivers strong performance at the cost of a steeper learning curve and a lower level of abstraction. Julia, according to Jansen, aims to bridge that gap.

TIOBE also added Mandarin Chinese search terms to its methodology, a change meant to broaden the index's geographic representation.

Further down, Go dropped to No. 11 from No. 8 in October 2025, and Delphi/Object Pascal fell to No. 19 from No. 9. Two other languages moved closer to the top 20: Dart jumped to No. 27 from No. 41, supported by its Flutter user-interface toolkit, and OCaml rose to No. 26 from No. 38, helped in part by growing use in real-time trading systems and in parsing technology.

The TIOBE Index is published monthly and is based on factors including the number of skilled engineers, courses and third-party vendors, TechRepublic reported.
