Trump Urges Renaming AI 'Super Intelligence' as Altman and Amodei Head to UN Security Council

U.S. President Donald Trump called at the UN General Assembly for artificial intelligence to be renamed "Super Intelligence," hours before OpenAI and Anthropic chiefs were due to debate AI safety at the Security Council and ahead of his meeting with China's Xi Jinping.

"The use of the word artificial makes intelligence fake... It is not fake. It's actually amazing," Trump said, according to CNBC's Daily Open. His push to rebrand the technology came as other governments sought agreement on safety rules for it.

Later on Wednesday, Trump was due to greet Chinese President Xi Jinping at an arrival ceremony ahead of Thursday's state visit to Washington, where AI has become one of the central topics between the two countries.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei were expected to address the United Nations Security Council later on Wednesday, joined by Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue, to debate AI safety and regulation. Their appearance followed calls to slow the pace of frontier model development, warnings Trump has described as a "hoax" and a "scam."

Investors took an optimistic view of the sector. A rally in technology stocks on Tuesday lifted the Nasdaq to a fresh record close and a new all-time intraday peak. Futures were flat in early trading on Wednesday after a broadly positive handover from Asia.

Crude prices fell on Wednesday after news that U.S. officials had what Trump described as a "very good meeting" with the Iranian delegation on the sidelines of the UN gathering. Trump said the discussion with Iranian officials lasted about three hours. Earlier in his UN address, he said he faced a "big decision" over whether to reach a deal with Tehran or "annihilate" the country. According to regional media reports, Iran has been communicating conditions for ending the seven-month war with the United States through a Qatari mediator.

In the AI industry itself, Anthropic and OpenAI each announced new, less costly models on Tuesday as both frontier labs face stiff competition from cheaper, open-weight rivals. OpenAI introduced additional tiers to its GPT-6 family, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, cutting API prices by 50% compared with GPT-5.6 promotional pricing. Sol, a tier below Astra, is intended for more complex workloads such as coding, while Luna is aimed at "high-volume tasks" including extracting information or summarizing documents, the company said. Anthropic unveiled Claude Opus 5.5, the latest release in its new Claude 5.5 model family.
