Tuesday Labs opens $200 reservations for $20,000 Voxel home robot

Tuesday Labs has opened $200 reservations for Voxel Series-1, a bipedal home robot with articulated arms and room-monitoring cameras. It is expected to cost about $20,000 and ship in 2028.

The model available for preorder is the Voxel Series-1, a mostly humanoid design with a pair of highly articulated arms that have seven degrees of freedom and end in grippers. The grippers are simpler than the dextrous fingered hands on robots such as Boston Dynamics’ Atlas. Tuesday Labs describes Voxel as a "droid butler." Its arms extend from the top of a torso that also appears to double as its head, with a small mouth and pixelated animated eyes placed closer to the robot’s waist. The eyes sit below a hidden pair of stereo RGB cameras that work with a secondary wide-field camera for monitoring an entire room.

The Series-1 navigates with a pair of Z-shaped legs whose knees bend in the opposite direction to human knees. Tuesday Labs says the design is intentional and allows the robot to bend its knees for balance and raise or lower its height while standing close to kitchen cabinets, tables and shelving.

Tuesday Labs’ website describes Voxel’s design and hardware in detail but gives less depth on its capabilities and household benefits, according to The Verge. The robot can carry out basic autonomous tasks such as decluttering a home and putting things back where they belong, watering plants, retrieving items such as books, or helping find a misplaced item such as a TV remote by asking Voxel where it last saw it.

The Verge reported that at launch the robot will not make dinner or change diapers. It said that if Voxel can reliably remember where a user left keys, people with poor short-term memory could have a reason to justify the steep price tag.
