tvOS 27.2 Beta Adds HomePod Surround Sound to Apple TV 4K

tvOS 27.2 beta 2 lets an Apple TV 4K pair four HomePods at once, an early form of HomePod surround sound.

According to 9to5Mac, citing a report from FlatpanelsHD, the capability appears in tvOS 27.2 beta 2. Through the Home app, two sets of HomePods, four speakers in total, can be paired wirelessly to an Apple TV 4K. In the configuration FlatpanelsHD documented, the box was set to send audio to two full-size HomePods and two HomePod minis.

The feature is not finished. Rasmus Larsen of FlatpanelsHD reports that users cannot yet assign roles to the four speakers, so a rear pair does not receive separate rear-channel audio and the front and rear units play the same sound. Atmos and surround sound from video sources are supported, but menu and game audio plays only through the front speakers.

Signs of the feature first appeared earlier in September, when HomePod 27 beta 8 was found to contain references to a forthcoming surround sound mode for Apple TV.

The tvOS beta arrives amid expectations that Apple is preparing a broader refresh of its home products. 9to5Mac reports that a new 'HomePad' device, along with new Apple TV 4K and HomePod models, is expected to launch in October.
