Twelve South's Airfly View adds a screen to simplify wireless headphone pairing

Twelve South releases Airfly View, a $79.99 dongle with a screen that guides wireless headphone pairing.

Instead of requiring users to interpret flashing or color-changing LEDs, the Airfly View displays step-by-step pairing instructions on its screen in one of 24 languages, including Japanese, Arabic, Portuguese and Polish. The package includes a carrying case and an adapter that connects the dongle's short 3.5mm headphone cable to an airplane's split headphone jack.

The screen also shows a battery-level indicator for the Airfly View's estimated 16 hours of battery life and identifies the connected wireless headphones or earbuds by the name they broadcast over Bluetooth. Twelve South says that can help travelers distinguish among multiple headsets, for example when several family members are traveling with their own headphones.

A single Airfly View can stream audio to two connected pairs of wireless headphones at the same time. Twelve South also says the device "supports Auracast broadcast audio, so it is ready for the next generation of Bluetooth headphones." That feature could allow more devices to receive audio from one dongle, but it depends on wireless headphones fully supporting Auracast, and not many currently do, according to The Verge.

The Airfly View is one of Twelve South's most expensive Airfly versions, The Verge reported. Its screen is intended to provide pairing guidance and status information on the device itself, rather than requiring users to consult a manual or rely on LED signals.
