Ugreen launches HomeAgent smart home platform with on-device AI at IFA

Ugreen unveiled HomeAgent, a local-first smart home hub combining NAS storage, on-device AI, and a voice assistant, at IFA this week.

HomeAgent is built around a central hub that acts as the brain of a smart home, running a local-first AI that users interact with through a voice assistant named Uliya. Ugreen is offering three hub configurations, each storing all data locally and processing video footage on-device, without monthly subscription fees. The top-tier MasterAgent MA100 is powered by an NVIDIA Jetson Thor T5000 platform for the highest level of local compute, while the HomeAgent HA100 and HA100 Pro offer progressively more advanced AI capabilities.

The system provides features such as cross-camera tracking, smart alerts for people, vehicles, pets, and packages, and answers to live status questions like 'where is my pet now?' It also includes AI-powered video search, text descriptions of events, and natural-language voice control of smart home devices and automations. Beyond camera footage, the hub stores personal files, including music, movies, and photos, functioning like a standard NAS.

Full retail pricing has not been announced. According to The Verge, the system will launch on Kickstarter in October with discounted early-bird pricing. Ugreen also introduced a smart speaker to run Uliya and a line of security cameras: the SynCare Indoor Cam ID500 Pro, SynCare POE Cam OD600 Pro, and battery-powered SynCare Cam OD800 Pro. The system can integrate with Ugreen's new E Ink Spectra-powered digital photo frame to display photos stored on the hub.

Ugreen joins other companies pursuing the concept of a local-first smart home hub. The report names SwitchBot, Reolink, and Aqara as having made moves in this space, and notes that Anker launched a similar product called the Eufy MindBase at IFA this week. Both systems support the Matter smart home standard for integrating third-party devices.

A reporter from The Verge visited Ugreen's booth and controlled Nanoleaf lights and smart blinds with voice commands to Uliya. The HomeAgent hub is a Matter controller and will support devices using Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Thread, Bluetooth, NFC, ONVIF/RTSP, and PoE. However, Ugreen's initial compatibility list is small, covering devices from Aqara, ThirdReality, SwitchBot, and Eve. While any Matter device should theoretically work, the first phase supports only lights, switches, sensors, and curtains, and the company advises using products it has approved.

Although everything can run locally on the HomeAgent, push notifications and remote viewing of camera footage require internet access. There is an option to use the cloud for the Uliya voice assistant. The Verge said the system's success will depend on how well it integrates with what users already own and how easy it is to set up and use.
