Ugreen NAS HDMI Port Plays Media and Opens BIOS and Terminal Access

Ugreen NAS HDMI port plays stored media via the phone app and opens BIOS and terminal access, Engadget reports.

Setting up a NAS is normally about reaching files over a network, which makes a video output on the back of the unit look out of place. Engadget reports that the port is intended for users who want to watch stored media without a smart TV or a streaming stick such as a Roku device, or who want to connect the NAS to a PC monitor or projector. The process is not the same as plugging in an ordinary device. When a Ugreen NAS is connected to a screen by HDMI, it displays a notice instructing the user to open the Ugreen phone app, which offers an option to cast media to the screen over the cable. The app then serves as the remote for navigating the library and controlling playback. Because the NAS has no physical remote, Engadget notes, the phone app is the only way to browse and play files from the library once the HDMI connection is made.

With a screen and a keyboard attached, the HDMI port also allows entry to the BIOS. According to the report, users should start the NAS with the screen connected and press Ctrl and F12 together repeatedly as startup begins to reach the BIOS setup screen, which is then navigated with the keyboard. Engadget advises that anyone planning to change BIOS settings first open the Advanced tab, locate Watchdog Settings and disable Watch Dog Control, since leaving it enabled causes the NAS to reboot after a set period of time.

Terminal access over HDMI is not officially documented. Engadget reports that Ugreen NAS users online say pressing Ctrl, Alt and F1 with a screen and keyboard connected brings up the terminal, though the function keys may differ between models. The standard route to a Ugreen NAS terminal is an SSH client on another computer on the same local network, so connecting directly to the unit can be simpler. Engadget cautions that settings in the terminal should be changed only by users confident in what they are doing, because the advanced options there can create problems that are difficult to fix.

The report notes that NAS servers from other makers with an HDMI port offer broadly similar functions, but that the steps for using them vary, and that Ugreen's own units have quirks that can make the port confusing until the procedures are known. Learning the methods before they are needed is useful, it adds, because the port does more than provide access to files.
