UK to allow £100 fines for loud audio on public transport

UK transport authorities can fine up to £100 from next Monday for playing audio aloud, TechRadar reports.

Transport safety officers, rather than drivers, are expected to issue the fines, according to TechRadar. The report said enforcement will determine whether the rules make a difference, and it questioned whether thinly staffed public transport services can support the approach.

TechRadar also listed cheaper headphones and earbuds that cost less than the £100 penalty, saying they could help people avoid fines. It recommended the wired Sennheiser CX 80U, which launched at $39.95 / £34.99 in January and received 4.5 stars out of 5 in its review; the report cited good sound, surrounding-noise blocking and a simple design, while noting missing features found on pricier buds.

For on-ear headphones, TechRadar pointed to the Sony WH-CH530N at $69 / £50. It said it had not finished testing the new model, but the predecessor WH-CH520 received 4.5 stars for balanced sound and long battery life, and the newer pair likely brings improvements. It also cited the over-ear Sony WH-CH730N, which received four stars and costs just under £99.

For wireless noise-cancelling earbuds, TechRadar recommended the JLab JBuds Mini ANC at $49.99 / £49.99. It said the earbuds are tiny, with a case that can be clipped onto a keyring, making them easy to carry on a bus. The report also said the non-ANC JLab JBuds Mini, released three years earlier, was suitable for people who want lightweight buds.

TechRadar’s broader headphone guide named the Sony WH-1000XM6 as best overall, the Bose QuietComfort Headphones as best mid-range, the 1More Sonoflow Pro HQ51 as best under $100/£100 and the Soundcore Q30 as best under $60/£50.
