ULTRALOQ Bolt Fingerprint Review: Full Apple Home Integration, No Home Key

A 9to5Mac review says the ULTRALOQ Bolt Fingerprint has extensive Apple Home support and multiple unlock methods, but lacks Home Key.

The review said ULTRALOQ markets the Bolt Fingerprint as its first smart lock fully integrated into Apple Home. Users can lock and unlock the door with the Home app or Siri, and when a HomePod or Apple TV serves as a home hub, the lock can join automations and remote-control sessions just like other HomeKit accessories. The author said Home Key is the only feature missing and its addition would move the lock from great to nearly perfect.

In addition to Apple Home, the lock is compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and IFTTT. A built-in 2.4GHz Wi-Fi radio supports app-based remote control without needing a separate bridge.

The Bolt Fingerprint offers a fingerprint reader that stores up to 50 fingerprints, supports up to 50 passcodes, and can be unlocked from the companion app or with auto-unlock when the user approaches. Voice unlock works through Siri, Alexa or Google Assistant. Two physical keys are included as a backup if the batteries die.

Administrators can issue custom passcodes for up to 50 users and distribute one-time or scheduled codes to friends, guests, cleaners or short-term renters. A Lockout Mode disables all electronic unlock methods, including passcodes and app access, when the owner is away and wants extra security.

The reviewer wrote that installation takes about 10 minutes with a Phillips-head screwdriver when replacing a modern deadbolt. No wiring or drilling is needed, though the door's strike plate has to be replaced. Once scanned into Apple Home, the lock can be controlled from the Home app and used in scenes and automations, such as switching lights on when the door is unlocked.

The reviewer said he or she uses the lock on an office door where laptops are stored before deployment and values how it unlocks as the door is approached and how the log shows comings and goings. The fingerprint feature was likened to Touch ID.
