The developer says the app uses hardware-level routing that suppresses Motorola’s built-in actions to prevent conflicts. Android Authority reported that Motorola has been quietly giving Android fans more reasons to pay attention lately, from a cleaner software experience and longer support promises to its upcoming embrace of GrapheneOS. But one part of the experience still feels unnecessarily locked down: the dedicated AI key on some of its phones. Motorola largely decides what that button can do, while MotoKey Plus is giving users the kind of control Android hardware is supposed to offer, according to the report.
By separating single press, double press, and press-and-hold, the app moves beyond a single assigned function. The developer says the hardware-level routing is intended to stop conflicts with Motorola’s own AI key actions. Users who want the customization now must sideload the app because it is not available through Google Play at this time.
