Vertical or Horizontal: Modern Console Placement Still Depends on Airflow, Stability and Space

Airflow is the main factor because consoles need room to breathe. Engadget says owners should not wedge a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S into a tightly enclosed media cabinet or stack other devices on top of it. Neither console should be placed right against walls. Waiting until dust requires an industrial vacuum is also a mistake. Both console makers recommend placing the hardware on a stable surface, which reflects the weight of the machines and the risk of a damaging fall.

Before deciding on an orientation, owners should look at vent locations and the surrounding furniture or shelf space. If laying a console down or standing it up blocks an intake or exhaust, Engadget advises doing the opposite. Beyond those cautions, the specifics depend on the room and setup.

The practical differences mostly concern stability and which console a person owns. Vertical placement generally saves space and can help in a narrow entertainment center or a crowded gaming area. It also makes the system easier to knock over. Engadget says rowdy dogs or particularly adventurous children can make vertical placement risky. The stand included with the PS5 and Series X helps, but the publication describes it as less than a perfect solution for energetic children.

Horizontal placement works well beneath a TV for a uniform look. It may take up more space, but it has a lower center of gravity and is therefore more stable. If the only available spots are the edge of a desk, beneath a TV or low enough for a wagging dog tail to reach, Engadget recommends horizontal.

The argument that a disc-capable console must sit horizontally to read discs is less relevant than it once was. Today's consoles are designed to work in either orientation, and they read discs only when installing games or quickly verifying ownership when a disc-based title starts. Horizontal has a small advantage because it is easier to remember that the disc label faces up, compared with vertical placement, where the label faces left. Engadget also notes that Sony's treatment of physical media fans may make disc insertion moot for PlayStation users in the future.

On the question of whether a vertical PS5 has a higher overheating risk, Engadget says there is no indication that standing the console upright has a negative impact on airflow or cooling. The factor that matters is the amount of space surrounding the console, regardless of orientation. According to Sony, the PS5 should never be placed in a cramped area and should be at least four inches away from wall surfaces.

If a PS5 runs hot, Engadget says to turn it off first and then check for obstructed vents. Nearby heat sources, dust accumulation or too much clutter around the console can contribute to excess heating. A good cleaning involves removing the side panels and clearing debris or dust with a soft brush or vacuum. There are videos, how-to guides and instructions for opening a PS5 for cleaning. Removing only the side covers is an easy job; going further is possible but risky for people who do not know what they are doing. A mistake can void the warranty if it is still active.

Dust accumulation should be monitored whether a console sits flat or vertically. Engadget says prioritizing cleaning, maintenance and safe placement should help a PS5 last for a long time.
