According to the Hacker News post, VODForge uses yt-dlp and ffmpeg under the hood with preconfigured settings that automatically adjust output based on source quality and frame rate. The developer said converter websites often delivered suboptimal bitrate, while paid converter software was unnecessary. VODForge became an internal game changer and was later released for free.

The tool supports 4K video, playlists, MP3 extraction up to 320 kbps, custom themes, a persistent searchable library, and automatic organization of downloads by channel and playlist. The developer is seeking feedback on user experience and additional features, aiming to make VODForge a widely adopted free alternative to sketchy websites and command-line tools.
