Voice phishing fraud confirmed at South Korea's five major banks doubles in 2025

Financial Supervisory Service data reported by Yonhap News show that South Korea's five major banks confirmed 8,760 fraud-flagged voice phishing transactions in 2025, more than double the 2024 total.

The banks were KB Kookmin Bank, Shinhan Bank, Hana Bank, Woori Bank and NH Nonghyup Bank. The data showed that their fraud detection systems detected the 8,760 transactions and that the banks later confirmed them as actual fraud after taking temporary measures to suspend them. An FDS monitors transactions, user activity and other data in real time to identify and flag suspicious behavior.

The banks’ FDS flagged 1.11 million suspected voice phishing transactions in 2025, up 39.9 percent from 796,000 in 2024. Of those, the banks took temporary measures against 157,000 transactions in 2025, compared with 125,000 in 2024.

The figures were disclosed as South Korean financial institutions are stepping up efforts to strengthen cybersecurity measures after a series of cyberattacks exposed the personal information of about 100,000 people across the industry, including email addresses, names and phone numbers, according to Yonhap News.
