Waymo Announces Singapore Expansion, Targets Public Rides in 2028

Waymo said it will expand to Singapore, with its first Jaguar I-PACE vehicles arriving in the coming months and rides for the public planned to begin in 2028.

Over the coming months, Waymo's first Jaguar I-PACE vehicles will arrive in Singapore as the company prepares for future operations. Throughout 2027, Waymo specialists will manually drive the vehicles on Singapore's streets to map them, and the company will modify its system to account for the country's road geometry and weather patterns. Waymo expects to begin offering rides to the Singaporean public in 2028 through its own app.

The Singapore plans follow Waymo's earlier move into Japan, where it started testing driverless cars in Tokyo in 2025, making the Japanese capital its first international location. A few days before the Singapore announcement, the company said it was preparing for commercial availability of its autonomous vehicles in Tokyo in 2027. Rides in Tokyo will be offered through Waymo's own app and through the GO Taxi app, which is widely used in the city.

In both Japan and Singapore, where buses and trains provide extensive public transportation, Waymo is aiming at first-and-last-mile connectivity. The company said its vehicles could be particularly useful for people who do not live near subways, or for those in a hurry to reach a station and catch the next train.
