Waymo Reports 82% Fewer Injury-Causing Crashes Over 271 Million Driverless Miles
Waymo says 271 million miles saw 82% fewer injury-causing crashes and 95% fewer serious-injury crashes.
Waymo claimed its technology “continues to outperform human benchmarks.” The company said the 271 million driverless miles represented 50 million more miles than it reported in its end-of-March update, a gain of 50 million miles over three months.
Over those miles, Waymo said it recorded an 82% reduction in crashes that caused injury and a 95% reduction in crashes that caused “serious injury or worse,” compared with human drivers. It also said injury-causing crashes involving pedestrians fell 93%, cyclists 86%, and motorcyclists 82%, again compared with human drivers.
Waymo’s analysis covered San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, Atlanta, and Phoenix. Its blog post included video showing near-misses that it said its automated system prevented from becoming injury-causing collisions.
Electrek reported that Waymo has released crash data and claimed crash reductions before, and that independent data has confirmed similar though lower crash-reduction numbers. According to Slashdot, Waymo now has enough miles to begin quoting how many injuries it has prevented, and the company said the number is high.
