What is Android System Intelligence and what happens if you turn it off?

Android System Intelligence, a Google component powering contextual features, can be disabled without breaking core phone functions, according to Engadget.

ASI runs as background plumbing behind features like Live Caption, Now Playing, Smart Autorotate, Screen Attention, app predictions, smarter copy and paste and notification actions, with the lineup varying by device. On Pixel phones, the component has a particularly long history. It operates within Android's Private Compute Core, introduced with Android 12, and relies on Private Compute Services as a bridge for cloud updates because its machine-learning features have no direct network access.

Google says ASI and Private Compute Services collect crash logs, diagnostics and device identifiers for app analytics, while usage and diagnostics collection can be switched off. The component may ask for system permissions to provide smart predictions, including access to contacts to suggest people you communicate with frequently. Google does not explain, however, why ASI might request location access, and not every feature needs every permission.

If you disable ASI, critical phone functions such as calling and messaging remain operational, according to a January 2026 Android Authority report cited by Engadget, while ASI-powered features like Now Playing and Live Caption are lost. Google does not say that disabling Android System Intelligence will make Android unstable, and it does not provide a universal list of what stops working across all devices.

For most people, leaving ASI on and disabling the individual feature or permission causing concern is the cleaner option, Engadget suggests. If the objection is Google's wider presence on Android, GrapheneOS offers a more extensive alternative, though some apps may still have compatibility issues. If ASI keeps stopping, Google's own troubleshooting advice is to restart the phone, install updates, force-stop the app and clear its cache or data.

Android System Intelligence is separate from Gemini. Google's Gemini Nano models run in Android's separate AICore system service. Google Play lists Android System Intelligence as having over 5 billion downloads.
