WhatsApp adds multi-passkey support and stronger two-step verification

Meta announced Tuesday new WhatsApp security features, including multi-passkey support and stronger two-step verification, along with an Android-only unknown caller context.

According to Meta, more than 1 billion people now use passkeys to log back into WhatsApp with Face ID, Touch ID, or a screen lock code. WhatsApp first introduced passkey support on Android in October 2023 and expanded it to iPhone in April 2024. The latest change lets users register more than one passkey for the same account, a feature especially useful for people who switch between iOS and Android devices.

The company also said two-step verification is expanding beyond the current six-digit PIN to support full alphanumeric passwords, including special characters. “Two-step verification is an extra protection layer that helps prevent someone from taking over your account, even if they get hold of your one-time passcode,” WhatsApp explained.

In addition, WhatsApp is adding a feature for Android users that provides more context when receiving calls from unknown contacts. The press release said: “When you get a call from someone not saved in your contacts, a little context can help you decide whether to pick up. On Android, you'll now see more information about a non-contact caller, like whether the number is from a different country and if you have any groups in common. Scammers rely on urgency – now you can take a beat with some more info before answering.” The feature is not yet available on iOS, according to the report.

The report also noted that iPhone users already have a similar function for traditional phone calls through Apple's Call Screening in iOS 26, but it doesn't work with WhatsApp calls.
