WhatsApp Moves Toward Opening All Chat Links in an In-App Browser
WhatsApp is developing a setting that would let iPhone users open any link shared in a chat inside the app, according to WABetaInfo. The option appears in the latest TestFlight build but is not yet available to testers.
The site said it found references to the feature in the latest TestFlight build of the app and published screenshots showing how it would work. No date has been given for when WhatsApp plans to release it to testers or to the public.
According to the report, a new "In-app browser" entry under Settings > Chats would let users choose whether links open inside WhatsApp or in their default browser. The same screen would hold controls for clearing cookies, cache and other browsing data stored by the in-app browser.
WABetaInfo said that when a user turns the option on for the first time, WhatsApp will show a bottom sheet explaining that links can now be opened within the app rather than in the default browser, and that users can switch back at any time.
The report also said WhatsApp cannot see which links are shared in a conversation or which of them users open.
WhatsApp began testing in-app viewing of certain HTTPS-secured business sites last May, according to WABetaInfo, with a three-dot menu that let users open those pages in their default browser instead. The work described in the new report would extend that support from business links to all links sent and received in chats.
