White House Launches America.gov AI Chatbot to Guide Citizens Through Federal Services

Trump cast the tool as a single entry point to federal information. "Instead of forcing citizens to search through the endless maze of tens of thousands of government websites and rules… you'll now have one front door for every single question," he wrote in a post on X.

Google confirmed that it is a partner on the launch and that its AI model, Gemini, is involved. It is unclear whether other AI companies also contributed, TechCrunch reported.

Making government services easier to navigate is a stated goal of the project, but whether an AI chatbot is the best way to do so remains an open question. Large language models are not infallible and remain prone to hallucinations.

CNN recently reported that the U.S. military nearly launched an armed operation against a Chinese vessel it believed was carrying components for nuclear weapons. The military aborted the mission at the last minute after realizing that the supposed threat was an AI hallucination.

A faulty answer from America.gov would be unlikely to trigger that kind of escalation, but a mistake could still carry serious consequences. People might rely on the chatbot for information about applying for food stamps, renewing visas or filing taxes, where errors could mean missed deadlines, denied benefits or penalties.
