Windows 11 can delete GPU driver on gaming laptops left in Eco mode, Reddit report finds

A Reddit user found that Windows 11 can wipe the discrete GPU driver on a gaming laptop if it stays in Eco mode for too long, requiring a reinstall.

The user, who owns an Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 with an Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti, said it "took me months to work this out" after the GPU was turned off by the operating system. In Eco mode, power is completely cut to the discrete GPU, leaving it offline, similar to an unplugged USB device. Windows 11's routine driver clean-up process, which runs by default every 30 days but was set to every 15 days in this case, then marks the driver as unused and removes it.

When Eco mode is turned off, the driver does not return. Instead, the GPU appears as a "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" in Device Manager, and the Nvidia driver must be reinstalled to restore functionality. The same problem has been reported to affect AMD discrete GPUs.

The situation is described as niche because gamers rarely use Eco mode. However, the report notes that someone might be a student studying for finals, using the laptop for work and leaving Eco mode enabled for months to preserve battery life. A second Redditor said they had kept a Zephyrus G16 in Eco mode for two months without the GPU disappearing, suggesting the problem may not affect all systems.

To prevent the removal, the original poster suggests taking the laptop out of Eco mode every couple of weeks, which restores the GPU and resets the clean-up counter. They mentioned that G-Helper's optimized mode turns the discrete GPU on when plugged in, and switching to standard mode periodically has the same effect. A registry fix can stop the clean-up process entirely, but the report advises against changing those settings unless the user is confident. If the driver has already been removed, simply reinstalling the Nvidia driver will restore the GPU.
