Windows 11 preview update breaks mouse cursor settings, wallpaper; Microsoft investigates

Microsoft's optional Windows 11 preview update KB5120998 is resetting cursor personalization and causing wallpaper and font glitches. Microsoft is investigating; users can uninstall it.

According to ZDNet, the update KB5120998, released on August 27, changes or reverts mouse cursor personalization settings to standard after installation. Microsoft described the issue on its Windows 11 known issues and notifications page, based on user reports. "The issue is described as resulting in appearance regressions and intermittent animation changes," Microsoft said. "Some reports mention that high-DPI mouse cursors are replaced with larger, white cursors, and custom cursor animations reverting to standard settings. Attempts to restore the previous cursor customization are reported to be unsuccessful."

The update is a preview of the September Patch Tuesday rollout, meaning it is optional rather than mandatory, but it still appears in Windows Update as ready for download. The preview also includes a resizable Start menu, a movable taskbar, and a cleaner Search window.

In addition to the cursor problem, Windows Latest reported that the update is also resetting the Windows wallpaper to a black screen and causing blurry fonts on certain systems. Wallpaper complaints have been posted in Microsoft's Feedback Hub. The font issue appears less widespread, Windows Latest noted, and Microsoft has not yet acknowledged it.

Microsoft said it is investigating whether the mouse cursor problem is caused by the update and will provide more information when available. Since this is a preview update, Microsoft has until September 8 to fix any glitches before the final September Patch Tuesday release.

For now, the only workaround is to uninstall the update. Users can go to Settings, select Windows Update, scroll to Update History, choose "Uninstall updates," locate "2026-08 Preview Update (KB5120998) (26200.9278)," and click Uninstall.
