WindowSill: A New Utility to Make Windows Taskbar More Useful

According to SSPai, Microsoft engineer Etienne Baudoux has released WindowSill, a command bar tool that enhances the Windows taskbar with clipboard history, file conversion, PDF tools, and more.

Baudoux, a software engineer at Microsoft who also creates personal Windows apps, is known for DevToys, a collection of small developer tools. WindowSill follows a similar concept, acting as a command bar that automatically detects the user's current input and displays relevant plug-ins. The most frequently used feature in the report is the clipboard history, which allows users to click and paste directly.

Users can reorder plug-ins based on their preferences. WindowSill includes a plug-in system with a store offering additional tools. For example, selected text can trigger unit or temperature conversion, and URLs can be turned into QR codes for sharing.

The File Helper plug-in is particularly powerful. When a file is selected in File Explorer, it offers options to convert text, tables, slides, videos, and images, as well as change encoding, compress, resize, merge or split PDFs, add or remove PDF passwords, and browse the contents of compressed folders. It also supports the third-party file manager Files in addition to Windows' native File Explorer.

The calendar tool includes a world clock with a draggable progress bar to view corresponding times in different destinations. A quick reminder feature can set short-term alerts that display full-screen notifications. The plug-in store also contains options like launching a group of programs, a Pomodoro timer, and custom command-line shortcuts for specific applications. Microsoft Teams integration allows muting the microphone or reacting directly from the command bar.

WindowSill also features a keyboard shortcut system: pressing Windows+Ctrl displays a number on each selectable element, and typing the number triggers the action. Two-digit numbers work as well, enabling mouse-free operation.

The core app and its main extensions are free. A paid tier called WindowSill+ unlocks AI text analysis, rewriting, translation, and grammar checks, effectively bringing AI text processing to Windows globally. Users can use the built-in AI provider or their own API key.

WindowSill can be installed from the Microsoft Store or obtained through the official website.
