Wired Charging Is Better for Battery Health, but Wireless Still Wins on Convenience
Engadget reports that wireless charging is up to 30 percent less efficient than wired charging and produces heat that can reduce battery capacity, though most users can balance convenience and battery life by using wireless for daytime top-ups and wired charging overnight.
When a phone is charged with a cable and power adapter, energy flows from the source through the adapter directly to the phone. Wireless charging adds steps. It uses an electromagnetic induction field to send power into the phone, with the charging pad pushing electricity around an internal wire coil that magnetically passes energy to a similar coil inside the phone. The energy moves from the source into an adapter, into the charging device, across to the phone, where it is converted into energy and recharges the lithium battery. Charging systems approved by the Wireless Power Consortium's Qi2 standard are up to 30 percent less efficient at getting power into a device than a cable, and the energy that does not make it becomes heat, warming both the charger and the phone. That heat can deplete battery life over time, reducing capacity by up to 12 percent over two years, or up to 25 percent in hot environments.
Engadget reported that users should choose a Qi-certified wireless charging system from a trusted manufacturer because noncompliant or poorly manufactured systems can overheat. Qi-compatible smartphones and devices work together to adjust current and voltage during charging to prevent unsafe heat buildup. Manufacturers are improving wireless charging support under the standard. Apple's iPhone 18 Pro reaches up to 50 percent battery life in 15 minutes with a 60W-capable adapter and USB-C cable, but the same process takes 30 minutes with a Qi2 wireless charger. Older smartphones are not built for fast charging and cap at up to 15W, so charging takes longer. Wattage matters: a phone takes longer to charge on an old 10W system than on a current 25W fast charger, and a 25W charger using an old 5W power brick will deliver only a slow 5W charge. Good smartphones have built-in power management and can safely be left connected to power overnight, whether wireless or wired.
To protect battery health during wireless charging, manufacturers limit how much power their devices can receive wirelessly to help manage heat dissipation. They also throttle charging rates if the smartphone becomes too warm. Lithium-ion batteries can handle 1,000 to 2,000 charge cycles, which represent how many times the battery can be fully charged and discharged. Battery performance degrades as it works through those cycles, so keeping the charge at around 20 to 80 percent can preserve them. Samsung and Apple offer built-in charging management to keep batteries within that zone. The feature can be found in Settings > Battery on iPhone 15 and later, or Settings > Battery > Battery protection on Samsung devices. Placement also matters: if a device is misaligned on the charger pad, the magnetic connection is weaker, less energy reaches the device and more becomes heat. Some cases are manufactured to be compatible with wireless charging, but not all, so a smartphone should be removed from its case if the case is not compatible.
For speed and efficiency, wired charging is best for battery health, according to Engadget. That does not mean wireless charging is bad. It takes longer, wastes more energy and is likely to degrade a battery a little faster over time if incorrectly managed. Its advantage for most users is ease of use. The WPC says 88 percent of smartphone users are satisfied with their Qi2 charging device.
