Wired or wireless speakers: the cable alone doesn't decide how a system sounds

An Engadget comparison of wired and wireless speakers finds modularity, Bluetooth latency, room placement and multi-room playback matter more to buyers than the connection type itself.

Engadget drew a distinction between how a speaker is connected and how it is powered. Traditional passive speakers require a separate amplifier that sends an amplified signal through speaker wire, while powered or active speakers have amplification built in. A wireless speaker receives audio over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or another wireless link, but that does not automatically make it cable-free: many home models still plug into an outlet, and only portable models run on batteries.

The clearest remaining advantage of passive wired systems is modularity, the report said. Because the amplifier and speakers are separate components, either can be replaced or upgraded without rebuilding the entire setup, which matters for a stereo or home theater system expected to last years. A wired connection also removes Bluetooth transmission from the latency chain. Bluetooth can introduce a delay between the source and the sound reaching the speaker, with the amount varying between devices. Video playback often compensates by delaying the picture to keep it in sync, but Engadget noted the problem is harder to mask in video games, where sound must react to the player's actions. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has described buffering in Bluetooth Classic Audio as one source of that lag and says LE Audio can reduce it.

A cable does not guarantee better music, however. If the source is a lossy audio file, information has already been removed during compression and a wired connection cannot restore it. The quality of the speaker, the amplifier and the recording still matters, as does the listening room. Cables are the obvious trade-off: a basic stereo pair is usually easy to wire, but surround sound can mean running speaker cables to several points around a room, limiting placement or forcing listeners to hide wires along walls, under rugs or behind furniture.

Wireless speakers are easier to place when running audio cables across a room is impractical. Bluetooth models connect directly to a phone, tablet or laptop without relying on home Wi-Fi, which Engadget said makes them especially useful for portable listening. Wi-Fi speakers suit permanent home setups: compatible models can use the same network for synchronized playback across several rooms, often through a companion app. The Denon Home 200, 400 and 600 speakers reviewed by Engadget, for example, use the HEOS app to group speakers or control rooms separately.

The trade-off is that wireless systems swap some cable management for network and software dependence. Wi-Fi speakers still need power, and multi-room platforms tend to work best within a single ecosystem. Bluetooth range and reliability can vary with distance, interference and the devices involved.

Bluetooth does not automatically mean poor audio quality either. Many codecs use lossy compression, but Qualcomm's aptX Lossless is designed to deliver CD-quality lossless audio with compatible hardware, a lossless source and suitable wireless conditions. Wi-Fi systems can support lossless and high-resolution streaming as well, so the connection type alone does not determine how good a speaker will sound. Some portable models support both: Engadget noted that the Sonos Play can use Wi-Fi at home or Bluetooth for a direct connection while out.

Engadget's guidance was to start with where the speakers will live and whether upgradeability, portability or multi-room playback matters more. Wired speakers fit a permanent stereo or home theater system for listeners who do not mind running cables, while wireless models make more sense when placement flexibility or multi-room playback takes priority. Bluetooth suits speakers meant to be moved around, and Wi-Fi works better for several speakers spread through a house. Buyers should then compare the actual speakers that match that setup, rather than deciding on the connection type alone.
