Wispr Flow free AI voice dictation tool wins praise in ZDNET review

The software, developed by Wispr, is available for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. On desktop, it operates as a full application triggered by a keyboard shortcut in any program; on mobile, it works as both an app and a keyboard compatible with any text-based application. It can dictate emails, text messages, notes, lists, and documents, and can also record and transcribe conversations, speeches, presentations, and meetings.

Wispr Flow comes in three editions: Free, Pro, and Enterprise. The free tier includes support for more than 100 languages, the ability to learn names and jargon, and an option to feed dictated notes into AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude. It also can identify speakers in transcribed meeting notes, answer questions about meetings, and connect to calendar and meeting tools such as Slack. Wispr says user data remains private and the platform is HIPAA-ready, and while there is an option to let the AI model train on a user's data, it can be turned off easily.

The free edition has a weekly word cap. According to the review, desktop users receive a 2,000-word soft cap and a 5,000-word hard cap, while mobile users get a 1,000-word soft cap and a 1,500-word hard cap. A warning appears as the soft cap approaches; if the user hits the hard cap, Wispr Flow slows down until the quota resets at the end of the week.

The Pro version, priced at $15 per person per month on a monthly plan or $12 per person per month billed annually, removes the word limits and adds access to advanced AI thinking models, priority support tickets, and centralized billing and user management. New free users get a 14-day trial of Pro, and they can earn a free month of Pro by inviting another person to try the program. The Enterprise tier includes all Pro features plus enterprise-grade security, administrative controls, complimentary seats for IT admins, audit logs, domain management, dedicated support, volume discounts, advanced usage analytics, and the ability to opt out of model training for all team members.

ZDNET colleague David Gewirtz previously described Wispr Flow as the one AI-based voice dictation tool he keeps returning to. The reviewer agreed, saying that after trying other third-party utilities and Windows' built-in tool, Wispr Flow is the one the reviewer would choose whenever preferring dictation over typing, pointing to its ease of use, accuracy, and flexibility across both desktop and mobile.
