World Model Companies Keep Product Plans Secret, Even From Suppliers
World model companies AMI Labs and World Labs are drawing funding but disclosing little about products or commercialization, a TechCrunch AI report said. Secrecy extends to suppliers and aims to delay competition.
World models are intended to automate spatial intelligence, according to the report. That could lead in many lucrative directions, including robotics, interactive video and more complex self-driving systems. But when the moderator pressed panelists and others about where the technology would be commercialized, the picture became unclear.
Michael Rabbatt, a co-founder of AMI Labs and its VP of World Models, joined the panel. When pressed on what the company was working on, he was cagey, saying, “We’ll talk about it when we’re ready to talk about it.” In an email, he clarified, “We’re still in a research and building phase, so we’re not talking publicly about any product plans or timeline.” The report said AMI is less than a year old, making silence reasonable.
But the reluctance extends across the world-modeling space. World Labs’ Marble is probably the most fully developed product in the area, with demos ranging from straightforward media creation to building explorable environments for video games or CGI effects. There are robotics use cases too, but the platform seems more designed to demonstrate capabilities than to commercialize them.
The secrecy reaches suppliers. Alex de Vigan, CEO of Physicl, a data supplier for the world model business, said he knows Physicl’s data has been useful for whatever the companies are building, but he remains in the dark about what exactly that is. “I wish they would tell us more. We could build more useful data if we knew what they were working on,” de Vigan told the article.
Part of the mystery comes from the versatility of world models as an idea, the report said. The simplest version is a navigable map of the world, similar to AI models that power self-driving cars. But the same modeling approach that helps a Waymo weave through traffic could also help a humanoid robot carry boxes, or turn a few minutes of video footage into an explorable environment. AMI has already dipped its toe in manufacturing, biomedicine, robotics and even AI software for doctors through its Nabia partnership. The report said AMI surely will not pursue all of those, but maybe one or two stand out.
No one doubts there are many viable businesses to be built on world model technology, according to the article. As long as fundraising is easy, there is no particular pressure to focus on one. In fact, there is good reason not to. If AMI announced tomorrow that it had built a humanoid OpenClaw or a next-generation Hollywood rendering system, many other labs would suddenly become very interested in the space. The lab would soon face potential competition from other world model companies, neolabs and even OpenAI and Anthropic.
In some ways, that is the flip side of easy fundraising. Competitors can fundraise too, and the same money that lets a company build under the radar also funds potential rivals once the path to market becomes clear. Even if competition is inevitable, the article said, it is best to delay it as long as possible, which means keeping quiet about exactly what you are building.
