X Launches Cashtag Trading for US Users

X rolled out Cashtags, letting U.S. users trade stocks through partner brokerages including Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken, and Coinbase. The feature links ticker conversations to live charts and brokerage accounts.

The feature extends long-standing behavior on X, where users have discussed stocks and more recently crypto. In 2008, financial platform StockTwits introduced the idea of Cashtags for Twitter, X's precursor, by placing a dollar sign before stock ticker symbols to make market conversations easy to find and reference. Those Cashtags tracked conversations around a particular stock rather than enabling trading. X's move into financial services through X Money changed that, TechCrunch reported.

Cashtags now turn ticker symbols for stocks, ETFs and cryptocurrencies into links that give X users the option to trade stocks. When users tap a supported Cashtag, they can view the asset's price chart and related posts on X. They can then tap "Trade" to continue at a participating brokerage, where they sign in and complete the trade. Users can also tap a brokerage partner to reach its mobile app or website to log in to an existing account or sign up for a new one.

Mridul Singhai, X Product Engineering Lead, said in a statement shared with TechCrunch: "Cashtags close the gap between a ticker on the timeline and the market itself. When you post or tap a ticker, you're taken right to the asset, where you have seamless access to the live chart, the conversation around it, and now the ability to trade with one of our brokerage partners."

Monique Pintarelli, SpaceXAI's Head of Global Advertising, said in a statement: "With our Cashtag partners, we're connecting the financial conversation to action. People come to X to discover what's happening, shape the conversation, and act in real-time on what matters to them. Our Cashtag partners make it possible to move seamlessly from discovery and conversation to a brokerage, without breaking the moment."

TechCrunch noted the feature could spur more market manipulation by AI-controlled bots, spammers and other bad actors, who could attempt to shift the conversation in one direction or another. That activity already happens on X even without a direct connection to brokerages, the report said.

Editor's Summary

X has launched Cashtags for U.S. users, linking stock, ETF and crypto ticker conversations to live charts and trades through brokerages such as Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken and Coinbase. The feature builds on years of market discussion on X and the earlier StockTwits Cashtag concept, while raising concerns about potential market manipulation on the platform.
