Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Costs $22.99 After Rollback, With Cloud Limits Ahead

Game Pass has four main tiers: Xbox Game Pass Essential at $9.99 per month, Xbox Game Pass Premium at $14.99 per month, PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at $22.99 per month. All are billed monthly; Engadget reported there is no annual Xbox Game Pass subscription or price-saving hack to lower the bill. Microsoft raised Game Pass prices aggressively in 2025, taking Ultimate to its all-time peak of $29.99 per month, then reduced it to $22.99 in April 2026 after backlash.

The streaming cap is meant to offset the lower subscription cost, according to Engadget. It will matter most to players who try a wide variety of titles without downloading them. Xbox is also limiting day-one titles on lower tiers. Call of Duty, for example, will no longer be available on its first day of release on those tiers. Ultimate keeps day-one releases, while other tiers may wait up to a year to play new releases, Engadget reported.

For players deciding whether Ultimate is worthwhile, the answer depends on what kind of gamer they are and which titles they value. All Game Pass tiers offer exclusive in-game benefits such as rare weapons or booster packs, but some top-tier perks are reserved for Ultimate. Fortnite players with Ultimate receive the Fortnite Crew Pack each month, including instant access to the premium Battle Pass, OG Pass, LEGO Pass, Music Pass and Rocket Pass Premium. Xbox also gives those users 1,000 V-Bucks per month. Ultimate also offers more than 50 older titles through its Ubisoft+ classics collection.

The tier also provides more than 500 games in its library, compared with 200 on Premium, and a higher cloud playtime limit of 15 hours per month against Premium’s 10 hours. Engadget reported that if a subscriber does not value day-one releases or the other perks, Ultimate might not be the right tier.

To make the most of Ultimate, Fortnite players should claim the Crew Pack and V-Bucks every month, according to Engadget. To avoid the new streaming limits, subscribers can download favorite games and reserve cloud hours for trying new titles. Ultimate members can also use subscriber-exclusive Xbox discounts of up to 30 percent off select games and add-ons from the store. They receive four times more points when buying games and add-ons, plus 10 percent back in points on eligible games. Engadget said Ultimate pays off for gamers who play often, locally, and remember to claim perks.
