Xbox Series X Runs Four PS5 Games Through PS5X, Limited to Developer Mode

Four PS5 games ran on Xbox Series X via PS5X, but only in Developer Mode, with a 5GB memory cap and no public release.

The demonstration comes with a substantial limitation. PS5X works only in the console's official Developer Mode, where Microsoft's documentation caps games at 5GB of memory; requests for more memory fail. A retail Xbox Series X game can use 13.5GB of the console's 16GB, with the remainder reserved for the operating system, leaving PS5X with about 37 percent of the memory a normal Xbox game can use. Microsoft lifts the cap only when software runs through the Visual Studio debugger. There is no public download for PS5X yet.

PS5X relies on hardware similarities between the two consoles. Sony and Microsoft built their current machines around closely matched AMD components: both have eight Zen 2 CPU cores, RDNA 2 graphics and 16GB of GDDR6 memory, and PS5 games are compiled for the x86-64 processor architecture used by PCs. KytyPS5 runs game code on the host CPU instead of recreating the PS5's hardware in software. Its developer calls it a compatibility layer, and in practice it behaves more like a translator that converts PS5 game requests into instructions a PC can understand.

The emulator translates PS5 graphics commands and recompiles shaders for Vulkan, which means a PC needs a Vulkan 1.3 graphics card. Xbox Developer Mode supports only DirectX 11 and DirectX 12. Uenal wrote in the video description that because Vulkan is not supported, everything needs to be translated to DirectX, and he acknowledged that AI was involved in the work. VideoCardz pointed out that fixes the KytyPS5 team makes to its PC renderer must be adapted before PS5X can use them.

Uenal describes PS5X as a research project for running PS5 homebrew and game backups on a Series X in Developer Mode. He claims it does not include PS5 firmware or decryption keys, and KytyPS5's documentation tells users to stick to game files they have obtained legally. Engadget cited the shutdown of the Switch emulator Yuzu as a legal caution: its makers settled a Nintendo lawsuit in 2024 by paying $2.4 million and shutting the project down. The team behind the PS3 emulator RPCS3 lists KytyPS5 and SharpEmu as the two active open-source PS5 emulators that can boot games and warns players about scam sites posing as real ones.

Progress on PC is also limited. Android Authority reported on Sept. 28 that KytyPS5 now goes in-game in a variety of PS5 titles on PC, and that one user had shown Marvel's Wolverine reaching its main menu in slow motion on a machine with an Nvidia RTX 5090. That clip showed no gameplay, and it is unclear whether it used the standard emulator build. PS5 emulation on PC remains an early field, and PS5X inherits progress only after each fix has been rebuilt for DirectX and fitted into a much smaller memory budget.

Microsoft blocked emulators in Xbox's normal retail mode in 2023, citing a store policy that bans products emulating a game system. It later reportedly handed out 15-day suspensions to players who found a workaround. Players who want to run PS2 or GameCube games through emulators such as Dolphin have had to rely on Developer Mode, but a console in that mode cannot load retail games until it is switched back. The four PS5 games shown running through PS5X are also sold on other platforms, and no PS5 exclusive has been demonstrated running through the emulator.
