Xiaomi unveils three self-developed chips as AI industry sees major moves
Xiaomi released three self-developed chips including the 3nm O3 SoC, while Hugging Face explored a $13B sale and Alibaba launched Wan3.0 video generation model.
The O3, built on a 3nm process with a 10-core CPU and a 200 TOPS NPU, scored 5,228,014 on Antutu, according to Xiaomi's lab tests. It is also the industry's first mobile SoC to support LPDDR6 memory. The O100 is a 6nm edge AI accelerator with 1.22TB/s bandwidth, and the D100 is a 3nm automotive-grade chip supporting up to 160GB of memory for on-device deployment of large models with over 200 billion parameters. Lei Jun, Xiaomi's CEO, revealed an easter egg: a 60-micron "OK" gesture embedded in the chip, symbolizing "all is well."
In other AI industry developments, Hugging Face, the AI developer platform, has hired investment banks to evaluate a potential sale that could value it at at least $13 billion, The Business Insider reported, citing sources. The company was valued at $4.5 billion in its 2023 funding round. Its neutrality among model companies could be a key issue in any deal.
Alibaba Cloud launched its video generation model Wan3.0 on Aug. 24, capable of generating 30-second videos in a single run and accepting document inputs such as doc, xls, ppt, pdf and md. The API prices start at 0.3 yuan per second for 480P resolution, with a 70% discount available until Sept. 23.
Tencent's QQ Pet, the virtual pet service that was discontinued in 2018, has returned on mobile QQ with AI capabilities. The new version uses Tencent's Hunyuan Hy3 model, allowing pets to have customizable personalities, proactive responses, and daily diaries written in first person.
In autonomous driving and robotics, NIO's head of intelligent driving, Ren Shaoqing, has founded a physical AI and embodied intelligence company, according to LatePost. NIO will make a strategic investment and cooperate with the new firm. Ren will continue to lead NIO's intelligent driving business. Meanwhile, XPeng's robotics unit raised over $900 million in its first external financing round, valuing it at $6.3 billion, with IDG Capital leading the round and GSR Ventures participating, along with strategic investors Tencent and Alibaba.
Other moves: ByteDance is integrating its AI office products TRAE and Coze into the Doubao ecosystem, according to 36Kr, with plans to launch a unified AI office brand "Doubao Work." NVIDIA is in talks to invest in Perplexity at a valuation exceeding $30 billion, The Information reported. Alibaba set the placement price for 710 million new shares at HK$112.70 each, raising HK$80 billion for AI infrastructure.
In research, the IJCAI-ECAI 2026 conference presented four paper awards and three personal achievement awards on Aug. 20, honoring works spanning from 1990 nonmonotonic reasoning to 2021 Logic Tensor Networks. A separate study published at ACL 2026 Findings found that general-purpose models like Doubao and DeepSeek outperformed medical-specific models in detecting, localizing, and correcting medical errors across three languages.
