Xteink S4 E-Reader to Run Android 11, Launch First in China

Xteink's X4 successor, the S4, will run Android 11 with a 4.3-inch E-Ink screen and 1,400mAh battery, launching first in China.

The Xteink X4 made an impression among e-reader fans when it launched. The small E-Ink device was designed for DRM-free reading and was small enough to fit on the back of most phones. Its software ran on a proprietary Linux-based operating system, which limited users to DRM-free EPUB files. For the S4, Xteink has reportedly switched to Android 11. That change gives the device more flexibility, because users can sideload reading apps such as Kindle, Kobo and KOReader.

The S4 is said to have a 4.3-inch E-Ink touchscreen with 220 PPI. It weighs 95 grams and is 6.98mm thick. The device is also reported to come with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Its battery capacity is listed at 1,400mAh, up from the 650mAh battery in the X4. Xteink had claimed the X4 could provide up to two weeks of battery life with moderate use.

Connectivity on the S4 is reported to include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, allowing wireless book transfers or audio listening. The e-reader is said to have a cool and warm front light for reading in the dark, plus a USB-C port for charging and data syncing.

The product is expected to launch in China first. The report says an international launch is believed to be possible in the following months. No pricing or exact release date was included in the report.
