YouTube Adds GIF Comments, Paid Fan Communities and Hype with Jewels

YouTube added GIF comments, TV commenting, paid members-only communities and Hype with Jewels at Made on YouTube, plus creator editing tools.

Comments remain a primary way YouTube viewers interact with creators' content, but YouTube's commenting features have trailed those of other social networks. TikTok recently said users can respond to videos with their voice and add polls, photo carousels and Live Photos to comments. Spotify lets video podcasters use polls and Q&As to engage audiences. YouTube will now support GIFs in comments and allow users to comment while watching YouTube on TV. The TV feature works by voice, so viewers do not have to type on a remote control, YouTube said.

YouTube also introduced a personalized comment moderation tool. The company already offers a comment moderation filter, but the new tool is intended to let creators tailor moderation more precisely, especially on live videos where keeping up is harder. YouTube is calling the personalized moderation an experiment and has not provided specific technical details about how it works.

Channel Memberships are evolving with paid, members-only communities, where members can share posts and start discussions with other top fans. YouTube will market these communities alongside other memberships on a new 'channel memberships' page for viewers, designed to help them find communities that match their interests. The changes come as advertising revenue is no longer the only way creators monetize their videos.

Hype, a feature that lets fans recommend smaller creators' videos to others and climb fan leaderboards, will gain a function called 'Hype with Jewels.' Previously, fans could hype videos three times a week for free. Now they can buy Jewels, a virtual currency, to hype videos more and help support creators and grow their audiences. Fans' handles will be permanently added to the video's description. YouTube said viewers have hyped more than 75 million unique videos over 1 billion times.

YouTube's direct messaging feature for sharing videos with family and friends will support group chats in the next few months. Users will also be able to record quick, raw videos and share them in those conversations, the company said.

These community-focused features arrived alongside other creator tools, including A/B testing, live dubbing, AI-assisted video editing and more.

Editor's Summary YouTube used its Made on YouTube event to add GIF comments, voice-based TV commenting, paid members-only communities and Hype with Jewels, while planning group chats in direct messages. The features expand fan interaction and give creators more ways to earn money beyond advertising. YouTube also introduced creator tools including A/B testing, live dubbing and AI-assisted video editing.
