YouTube on Android Auto: Limited Playback Remains While Bigger Update Looms

YouTube on Android Auto currently only streams audio while driving; Google promises HD video playback when parked later this year.

At the Android Show: I/O Edition in May, Google promised a major upgrade within the year. The update will bring native YouTube support to Android Auto, allowing HD video at 60 frames per second while parked and a seamless transition to audio-only mode once driving begins. It will also include a reworked interface with widgets and deeper Gemini integration for brands like BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, and Hyundai.

Google's announcement video states that listening to YouTube while driving is exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers. It does not clarify whether Premium Lite members get the same benefit, and no release date has been provided. Until then, most users must rely on the scaled-back implementation.

Unofficial methods such as the Fermata Auto app or AA Browser promise actual video playback when parked, but results are mixed. These workarounds offer a potentially cheaper way to access the feature without a paid subscription.
