YouTube Premium Lite review: one editor cancels after a month over lingering ads and value

Android Authority editor cancels YouTube Premium Lite after a month, saying ads remain and value is poor.

The reviewer had long wanted an ad-free YouTube plan that did not bundle YouTube Music. When Google launched Premium Lite in all markets where YouTube Premium is available, the writer signed up in South Africa, knowing that the cheaper tier included ads on Shorts and music videos.

The experience showed that ads are not limited to those areas. On the TV app, the first video in the recommended feed was always an ad, and on mobile, sponsored videos appeared after every few videos and during browsing or searching. The reviewer said they felt they were now paying to be advertised to.

The report also questioned the pricing. In South Africa, Lite costs 49.99 rand per month, about $3.10, which is 39% cheaper than YouTube Premium at 81.99 rand, while YouTube Music alone costs 64.99 rand. In the United States, Premium Lite is $8.99 a month, Premium is $15.99, and YouTube Music is $11.99, making Lite 43.8% less expensive than Premium. But the reviewer argued that Lite still costs more than half of Premium while delivering less than half of its value, because it drops YouTube Music, adds remaining ads, and limits offline downloads. Lite also has no family or annual plan.

The article cited an Android Authority survey showing that most polled readers still do not pay for YouTube Premium, with many using ad blockers and others tolerating ads or quitting YouTube. The reviewer suggested that response is understandable: Google increased ad frequency, yet its cheaper subscription tier does not fully remove ads.
