YouTube Promises Custom Feeds and a Lot More AI Later This Year

YouTube previewed Custom Feeds, comment GIFs, group direct messages and more AI features at its annual Made on YouTube event. Custom Feeds will roll out soon in the US for web, mobile and TV users.

Custom Feeds are designed to give users more control over YouTube's homepage, which Ars Technica reported often draws criticism. With the feature, users can add new tabs to the YouTube interface and fill them with content of their choosing. To create a feed, a user types a description and lets YouTube populate the page. The user can then refine the description and rate video suggestions to tune the Custom Feed. Google said users will be able to save "multiple" feeds, but it did not specify an exact number. The feature will roll out soon in the United States for web, mobile and TV users.

YouTube is also planning changes to how people interact on the platform later this year. The company will add the option to post GIFs in comments, a feature Ars Technica said has apparently been a common request for some time. The comment box will let users search for popular animated thumbnails and post them on regular videos and YouTube Shorts.

In addition, YouTube's direct messaging feature is adding support for group chat. The group chat option will initially be available only in the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Brazil and some European countries, according to Ars Technica.

The event also included plenty of AI features for both viewers and creators, Ars Technica reported, alongside the non-AI updates.
